Research that makes a difference

At Hywel Dda University Health Board, we believe that research is fundamental to delivering better health and well-being.

Our growing and ambitious research portfolio gives patients and communities across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire opportunities to participate in high-quality health research, closer to home.

From locally developed studies to national and international clinical trials, we work with patients, clinicians, universities, industry and Health and Care Research Wales to generate new knowledge, evaluate emerging treatments and technologies, and translate evidence into meaningful improvements.

With dedicated research facilities across our three counties and a growing multidisciplinary research workforce, our ambition is clear: to embed research into everyday health and well-being, ensuring that the communities of Mid and West.

Wales have opportunities not only to participate in research, but to help shape and benefit from it.

Research across our communities

Our research teams work across Hywel Dda University Health Board, with a presence across our four acute hospital sites: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth, Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen, Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest.

Working across hospital, community and primary care settings, our multidisciplinary research teams support a diverse and expanding portfolio of studies. This enables more people across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire to access research opportunities within the communities where they live.

Research is a collaborative endeavour. Our research workforce works alongside clinical teams, primary care, universities, industry and wider industry partners to address important health challenges, generate robust evidence and accelerate the translation of research into practice.

Our ambition extends beyond delivering individual studies. We want to create a research active culture across Hywel Dda, where asking questions, generating evidence and evaluating new approaches become integral to how we improve services and deliver care.

By bringing research closer to our communities, we aim to widen participation, reduce inequalities in access to research and ensure that new knowledge translates into better experiences, better services and better health outcomes for the people of Mid and West Wales.

Be part of research

Research begins with people.

The involvement of patients, the public and our communities is fundamental to ensuring that our research is relevant, inclusive and focused on the issues that matter most.

There are many ways to be involved. You can help shape research priorities and study design through Patient and Public Involvement (PPI), contribute your experiences and perspectives, or participate in a research study or clinical trial.

By working with our communities, rather than simply conducting research for them, we can develop research that better reflects local needs, improves experiences and delivers meaningful improvements in health and wellbeing.

Whether you are a patient, member of the public, clinician, researcher or potential partner, we want you to be part of our research community.
